A New Season Starts January 13

Jill Webster will be the guest speaker on January 13, as Friends of the Braselton-West Jackson Library begins a new season of Lunch & Learn programs. Ms. Webster was born and grew up in Holleman’s Bend, a community near Granville, Tennessee, the subject of her book “Growing up on the Cumberland River”.

Lunch will be provided by Braselton’s Country Kitchen and — a new feature for this year’s Lunch & Learns — the program will include a highlight of The Village of Deaton  Creek.

Other communities will be featured on February 10, March 10 and April 14, with catering by other area restaurants, and an array of other interesting speakers.

Don’t miss these programs, the second Wednesday of the month, at 11:30 AM at the Braselton Police and Municipal Court Building (Lower Level, Rear Entrance) at 6750 Highway 53. Attendance fee is $6 per person, program and lunch included!

For reservations, contact Diane Lemaster at 678-546-3380 or dilemace@aol.com

“Support The Arts”

That’s the message sent home with us today by Todd Chandler, Choral Director of the Jackson County High School Chorus; a plea almost. With budget cuts in education, the arts are the first to suffer and some of the young people in the chorus now may see their career aspirations dimmed if public support of the arts diminishes. “Not just our chorus, or our school,” Chandler added, “but support the arts everywhere.”

The performances today, during the last-of-the-season “Friends” Lunch & Learn, were very well received on this rainy day. Lilia Dalton and Wesley Henson started them off with solos, followed by a duet from Phantom of the Opera. The program also included a pop medley by the girl members of the chorus, followed by a hymn sung by the guy members, and ended with a number by the entire group.

It sent us on our way to our afternoon activities with a warm glow – and not just from the excellent soups that were served.

The Friends of the Braselton-West Jackson Library are holding a membership drive with a party at Diane Lemaster’s on Sunday, October 18 (call her: 678-546-3380) and will resume the Lunch & Learn series next January.

BTW . . . ., it’s nice to scoop The Paper and Mainstreet News. The advantage of New Media over the old print media is its immediacy. You can read about today’s program in next week’s papers, or . . . . here it is already!

Kit Braselton Kicks Off 2009-2010 Season

FoLibrary - Kit Braselton

The season’s first Lunch & Lunch guest speaker, on September 9, was Herbert B. “Kit” Braselton, the 12th child of Green Braselton, one of the three Braselton brothers of the legendary Braselton Store, which still stands – now operating as an Antiques Mall, and no longer owned by the Braselton family – on the corner of Hwy. 53 and Hwy. 124.

FoLibrary - Kit Braselton+audience

An octogenarian with a sense of humor and a deep-rooted faith, this story-teller held the audience in the palm of his hand, as he recounted the family’s history, going back to the first Braselton, who arrived in The New World in the early 1700s from Wales.
